An investigation into parental involvement in children’s English language learning at a public primary school = Nghiên cứu về việc tham gia của cha mẹ vào việc học Tiếng Anh của con cái tại một trường Tiểu học công lập tại Hải Dương

The primary purpose of the study is to investigate the extent of parental involvement in children’s English language learning at a public primary school in Hai Duong, Vietnam. In the study, data were collected from 139 parents of Grade 5 students through the questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The questionnaire was based on Epstein’s (2009) Six Types of Parental Involvement framework and analyzed using SPSS and Microsoft Excel software. Interview data were examined using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that parents were most engaged in the "Parenting" type of involvement, while "Decision-making," "Communicating," and "Volunteering" were reported at relatively lower levels. Moreover, parents engaged more in home-based school activities rather than provided their children with schoolbased support. The study provides valuable insights into the types and frequency of parental involvement and highlights the need for schools to design targeted strategies that encourage greater engagement from parents, particularly in underrepresented areas such as decision-making and volunteering. The findings are expected to inform teachers, administrators, and policymakers on how to improve effective home–school partnerships to enhance English language learning at the primary level.
