This dissertation focuses on an action research project conducted to investigate the effectiveness of using outside classroom activities in developing speaking skills for 20 grade 10 students in a public high school in Hanoi. The research questions addressed are: How do outside classroom activities affect students' speaking skills? What are students' attitudes toward these activities?”. The students engaged in weekly outside classroom activities in an online platform (Facebook group), where they recorded their oral responses to specific topic questions and provided peer evaluation for their partners. Data were collected from students’ work, and two questionnaires in week 4 and week 8. The findings revealed that outside classroom activities enhanced the students’ speaking skills, such as pronunciation, fluency, accuracy, vocabulary, and confidence. The students also showed positive attitudes towards these activities and appreciated their importance in enhancing speaking abilities. However, some challenges were also identified, such as limited time and question difficulty, lack of in-person interaction and giving peer feedback. The study implies the significance of incorporating outside classroom activities into language teaching practices and offers implications for future teaching and research in similar contexts.
